The mold is lightweight making it easy to handle, especially when demolding hump molded pieces; Plus, shipping, which is based on weight, costs less. And, you are getting two distinct molds, each enabling unique techniques, for about the price of one hump mold of this size.

About the Slump Mold

The inside slump mold tends to have a rougher surface than the outer, smoother hump mold, and may have minor imperfections such as small air bubbles. We have not found that these to transfer onto the clay. However, every mold is handmade and differs. Any transfer would be slightly raised on the piece's outside, and can be smoothed away with a metal/hard rib after demolding.

The inner slump mold is generally not quite centered within the outer hump mold. You can see this in several photos where the rim varies a bit in thickness around the top perimeter. This should not affect slumped pieces (the slump mold form is uniform), unless you want to use the rim to make a flange, in which case you would need to base it on the width of the narrowest portion.
